  1. A smart card is a plastic card with an 
  2. embedded microprocessor and memory. It can 
  3. store, for example, personal data,
  4. identification, and bank-account details, to 
  5. enable it to be used as a credit or debit 
  6. card. The card can be loaded with credits, 
  7. which are then spent electronically, and 
  8. reloaded as needed. Possible other uses range 
  9. from hotel door `keys' to passports.
